1966 Lighting Issues

Bill,
I am having the same problems a couple of your other bloggers have had but I don’t see where they said the final fix was. My high beams work but when I switch to low they all go out. I have put 4 new bulbs in, 2 dimmer switches, cleaned the contacts on the 5 wire relay and it seems to be working. Also my turn signals work but the dash indicators both flash instead of just the one. Any ideas?

Greetings Thomas –
I would begin by testing for power at the headlights with the system set on LOW beams. If there is power at the headlamps at this time I would then check the ground circuit for these lights and also check if the wiring is correctly installed at the connectors. If there is no power at the beams in the Low position setting you should then check the dimmer switch for input from the headlamp switch and proper output from the dimmer itself. Correct wiring diagrams are very necessary to trace these circuits.
When you say that you cleaned the turn signal relay contacts, did you check the inside or only the outside connector? Again the correct wiring diagram is necessary to trace and troubleshoot the turn signal circuit.
Sincerely,
Bill

Bill,
Thanks for getting back to me. I actually spoke with one of the techs at Lincoln Land today and they told me the problem was probably the auto-dimmer. I bypassed it and installed a base model dimmer switch. That not only fixed the low beams but also the dash indicators for the turn signals! It was a fairly simple repair. I hope you can pass this on to others who might be experiencing the same problems. Thanks again!

Thomas –
Good that you have found the problem. Yes, the optional Automatic Headlamp Dimmer can cause some strange headlight action when they fail. Our technicians are well versed with these issues and we at Lincoln Land of course have the luxury of parts here to test with. As this early type of option ages, they can start to have problems. I always begin though with the simpler easy to test items. Testing the automatic h/l dimmer section as per the manual is quite time consuming. We usually have parts available if you are planning to restore this feature.
Sincerely,
Bill
