1963 Continental Running Issues

Bill –

Car always hesitated on acceleration. The car was not drivable until it warmed up. Suddenly the car is not drivable. It stalls out when touching the accelerator pedal. I can make the engine run by jiggling the gas pedal with my foot but the engine will be at a higher rpm. This is in neutral. If I put it in gear it will die and I don’t like doing that at a high rpm. I have installed a Pertronix unit and replaced the fuel filter. The carburetor was rebuilt a few years ago. Any suggestions?

Michael

Hi Michael –

Based on your information, and not knowing any of the usage history of your 63 I can offer the following thoughts. Your symptoms strongly suggest fuel system problems and or carburetor issues. I am assuming that your basic tune up items such as spark plugs and high tension wiring etc. are in good shape. If your Lincoln has ever been stored for a period of time and suffered from contaminated fuel, the fuel delivery system and carburetor could possibly be contaminated. This will include fuel tank, fuel pickup filter in the tank, fuel filter under the hood, fuel pump and carburetor. If any of the above is found to have happened, the carburetor will probably need  to be removed and serviced again. As I have stated, all of the above suggestion are based on your symptoms and information. You will probably need to consult with a good tune up technician in your area. Good luck and please let us know what you discover.

Sincerely,

Bill
