Bill –
Still have the original Carter carb and thermostatic choke on it. Feels like it struggles/bogs climbing hills when cool/warm and that’s about as much as it’s been driven for years because of the issue. Recently I finally got the car to full temps on the freeway and the slightest squeeze of the throttle would kill the engine. It would start right up after dying and idle fine. The carb has been rebuilt a couple times, the last time by an old-school pro, but it didn’t seem to change anything. It uses electronic points. The fuel pump pushrod has been replaced. I’m at my wits end at this point. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark
Hello Mark,
From your description of when and how the engine stalls, I can offer the following suggestions for you and your mechanic to consider. I would first want to test the fuel filter for plugging and the fuel pump pressure and volume available to the carburetor. It does sound like a lack of enough fuel problem from your symptoms. I am of course assuming that your carburetor has been rebuilt correctly as you are reporting in your letter and that your air filter is not plugged up. Another cause for lack of fuel for the carb could also be a plugged fuel pickup etc. in the fuel tank. Let us know what you find.
Sincerely,
Bill

Thanks Bill!
I’ll let you know. Might be time to pull the tank to see what’s in there as well.
