1962 Continental Stumbling On Acceleration

Hi Bill –

I have a bad stumble and stalling on acceleration under load. Complete rebuild over the years and I have put about 6 miles on since we got the car back together. Accelerator pump seems to work. Timing advances when revving in neutral.

The fuel pump seems weak as I get air in the filter bowl when revving in neutral. When bypassing fuel pump (via gravity feed) the filter bowl is full but the stumble is still there. Vacuum is at about 20 bars at idle.

Plugs, points, condenser all new.

What am I missing?

Centripetal advance? Vacuum? Carb?

Regards,

Mitch

Hi Mitch

Your issue is not uncommon. I assume that your mention of the vacuum advance means that it is in good working order as designed.

If all of your ignition and fuel systems are in good order as you suggest (including the high tension spark plug wiring)  I can only look towards the carburetor next. It may be overdue for a complete overhaul with an ethanol safe o/h kit. Let us know what you find.

Sincerely,

Bill
